There are certain items that form the core of a wardrobe, year round. These versatile workhorses are often labelled ‘basics’ or ‘essentials’. These are not hidden gems, but the foundation of any stylish capsule wardrobe. This mini-series of articles covers the capsule wardrobe essentials that I lean on continually. I was inspired to lay out these essentials by Minimalista Edge’s article.
One of the keys to a capsule wardrobe is the fact that you probably already have one. This series of articles is a testament to that. Lists like this should not be making us dumber, or trying to covertly convince you to expand your wardrobe, out of an itching sense of needing more than enough.
So these are my capsule wardrobe essentials. Another person, with an other lifestyle, would say different. However, I have tried to be as general as possible, so that you can view this article as a guide to assessing what your essentials are.
Number 1 in my capsule wardrobe essentials – everyday shoes!
Think sneakers, trainers, comfy boots, work shoes etc.
“Everyday shoes” is a broad enough category to include whatever works for you on a daily basis. In winter or summer this will, perhaps inevitably, change. My number 1 recommendation with shoes is to stick to styles and colours that you enjoy wearing. For example, I only really look, nowadays, for shoes that are black, white, or (with the right shade/material/design) brown/tan.
If you want some inspiration from my capsule wardrobe, I definitely recommend Vans Old Skools as a super-comfy and versatile shoe. Until recently I have been wearing old Converse shoes when the weather demands – the difference in comfort between Vans and Converse, however, now that I have these Old Skools is comical. I’m not the only one who thinks so, either.
What everyday shoes are your capsule wardrobe essentials?
Day to day what shoes do you always wear, or want to wear? The comfiest? Most stylish? The ones that make a statement? Our everyday shoes are well worth taking time and money to invest in. Whether that is finding shoes that don’t give you blisters all day, ones that are capable of surviving the climate where you live, or finding just the right design that fits with your style. Other options could include, for example:
Suede/Leather boots, like Saint Laurent Wyatts.
Basketball or sports inspired trainers/runners
